FLARM FAMP Public Protocol
Open Radio Protocol for Traffic Safety
The FLARM FAMP Public Protocol (FFPP) is a core component of the FLARM network: it defines how participants exchange critical traffic information – including identification, position, heading, and aircraft type.
By publishing the protocol, we embrace transparency and openness: developers, researchers, and the aviation community can understand how our technology works and build their own applications on top of it. This strengthens trust in the FLARM ecosystem and makes a meaningful contribution to improving aviation safety.
An open protocol delivers concrete benefits:
- Interoperability – Third-party vendors and open-source projects can develop FFPP-compatible devices and software, increasing the dissemination of collision-relevant data across airspace.
- Innovation – Research institutions, startups, and hobbyist developers can create new applications, such as route analysis tools, traffic visualizations, or safety simulations.
- Broader coverage – The more compatible receivers are deployed, the more complete the situational awareness picture becomes – benefiting every pilot.
- Community and trust – Openness fosters dialogue with the aviation community and enables the protocol to evolve collaboratively over time.
FFPP is free to use for non-commercial applications that do not transmit FFPP radio packets. For commercial or extended use cases, a standardized license agreement is available – please get in touch with us.
