Remote ID for UAV

Important remote identification

Remote ID is a system for remotely identifying and locating Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). By making drone operations transparent, it increases accountability for the operator, leading to enhanced safety, security, and compliance. This system is a key component in enabling large-scale Beyond-Visual-Line-of-Sight (BVLOS) and automated drone operations.

However, Remote ID is not effective in detecting rogue or malicious UAS that do not comply with the rules. For well-intentioned operators, it serves as a means to demonstrate compliance, akin to a car’s license plate.

There are various technical sub-standards for Remote ID. Implementing and understanding Remote ID can thus be challenging due to the multitude of standards, each with its subtle differences. This diversity in standards requires careful attention to ensure compliance and effective implementation, making it a complex aspect of drone operation.

FLARM products for UAS generally support Remote ID based on Wi-Fi technology (NAN and Beacon frames). Our products are verified to comply with the respective standards in Europe (including France) and the USA. The following standards are supported:

Procukt highlights

  • Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/945, Parts 6 and 11

  • ASD-STAN prEN 4709-002

  • Arrêté du 27 décembre 2019 définissant les caractéristiques techniques des dispositifs de signalement électronique et lumineux des aéronefs circulant sans personne à bord

  • Title 14 CFR Part 89

  • AA AC 89-2

  • ASTM F3586-22

  • ASTM F3411-22

Remote ID will become mandatory in Europe for most drone operations starting January 1, 2024. In the US, the mandate was initially set for September 2023 but was postponed to March 16, 2024. You can find RemoteID-enabled FLARM products here.
