Collision warning

Originally developed in 2004 to overcome the disadvantages of “See and Avoid”, FLARM is now the most widely used safety system for general aviation. Unlike the TCAS used in airliners, FLARM is optimised for operation under visual flight rules (VFR).

FLARM calculates the future flight path and transmits this to nearby aircraft by radio. At the same time, FLARM receives the future flight paths of surrounding aircraft, from which an intelligent predictive algorithm calculates the collision risk for each aircraft on the basis of a comprehensive risk model. In the event of danger, the pilot is warned about dangerous traffic and the relative position of the other aircraft is displayed. This allows the pilot to take evasive action in good time. Even without immediate danger, FLARM provides a comprehensive picture of the situation and thus increases the situational awareness of every pilot.
